Bounds for Blind Rate Adaptation

چکیده
A core challenge in wireless communication is choosing appropriate transmission rates for packets. This rate selection problem is well understood in the context of unicast communication from a sender to a known receiver that can reply with acknowledgments. The problem is more difficult, however, in the multicast scenario where a sender must communicate with a potentially large and changing group of receivers with varied link qualities. In such settings, it is inefficient to gather feedback, and achieving good performance for every receiver is complicated by the potential diversity of their link conditions. This paper tackles this problem from an algorithmic perspective: identifying near optimal strategies for selecting rates that guarantee every receiver achieves throughput within reasonable factors of the optimal capacity of its link to the sender. Our algorithms have the added benefit that they are blind: they assume the sender has no information about the network and receives no feedback on its transmissions. We then prove new lower bounds on the fundamental difficulty of achieving good performance in the presence of fast fading (rapid and frequent changes to link quality), and conclude by studying strategies for achieving good throughput over multiple hops. We argue that the implementation of our algorithms should be easy because of the feature of being blind (it is independent to the network structure and the quality of links, so it’s robust to changes). Our theoretical framework yields many new open problems within this important general topic of distributed transmission rate selection. 1998 ACM Subject Classification C.2.1 Network Architecture and Design, F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems

Operational Aspects of Decision Feedback Equalizers
The central theme is the study of error propagation effects in decision feedback equalizers (DFEs). The thesis contains: a stochastic analysis of error propagation in a tuned DFE; an analysis of the effects of error propagation in a blindly adapted DFE; a deterministic analysis of error propagation through input-output stability ideas; and testing procedures for establishing correct tap converg...
متن کاملJoint Blind Equalization and Blind Estimation of Equalizerperformance
This paper proposes a new method for the estimation of the bit-error-rate (BER) in the output of blind equalizers, which could be applied for telecommunication system fault management. Trends in radio communications are discussed, which motivate the focus on blind adaptation, and a simple test for assessing decision errors in the output of the decision device is derived. Simulations validate th...
متن کاملPerformance bounds for linear blind and group-blind multiuser detectors
In blind multiuser detection for CDMA systems, the receiver knows only the code of the user of interest, while in group-blind multiuser detection the receiver knows a subset of codes, e.g., the in-cell users in a basestation. This paper derives bounds for the performance of linear blind and group-blind multiuser detectors. The bounds are derived under a number of different system assumptions. T...
متن کاملBlind image restoration using local bound constraints
A new method of incorporating local image characteristics into blind image restoration is proposed. The local variance of the degraded image is used as a measure of spatial activity, from which individual pixel bounds are determined. A parameter de ned by the user controls the degree of smoothing. The local bounds de ne the solution more precisely than smoothness constraints on the image (inclu...
متن کاملMaximum likelihood estimation of constellation vectors for blind separation of co-channel BPSK signals and its performance analysis
In this paper, we present a method for blind separation of co-channel BPSK signals arriving at an antenna array. This method consists of two parts: the maximum likelihood constellation estimation and assignment. We show that at high SNR, the maximum likelihood constellation estimation is well approximated by the smallest distance clustering algorithm, which we proposed earlier on heuristic grou...
